"Hello! New grad here
I have a case that I would appreciate some input on. About two weeks ago I got presented to Guinea pigs with scabs and alopecia mainly on their feet and around their ears where the owner complained about them being quite pruritic. I took skin-scraping and hair pluck and sent it to the lab for a ringworm analysis. This came back positive for Trichophyton spp. I started treatment with terbinafin (20mg/kg) systemically (250mg tbl diluted in 5ml water= 50mg/ml) together with terbinafin ointment topically 7 days ago. Both of the Guinea pigs weight 450g, so I calculated the dose to be 0,18ml SID. The owner says today that the Guinea pigs still have severe scabs and she is worried that the treatment is not working. Therefore I wonder if any of you have experience with treatment of ringworm in Guinea pigs with regards to how long it takes for the owner to see improvement or if I need to increase the dose? Or could there be any other medication I could add to the treatment plan?
Btw: I've told the owner to keep the remainder of the diluted tbl in the fridge so she gets as many uses as possible out of each tbl. Is this something that can affect the effect of the medication?
