Siberian goldfinch case:
6 months approx. of sporadic deaths in finches. No prior symptoms; one day eating healthily, one day great weight loss and the day after, death. Controlled environment with constant temperature and humidity. Around 3 weeks ago for this goldfinch, culture and sensitivity tested for Salmonella and treated 10 days with Apramycin (sensitive from C+S). Re-test showed traces still present, a further 10 days treatment given. In this period, no deaths were recorded and birds seemed to recover. In the past 4 days (the day after the second round of treatment ended), bird deaths re-started. Necropsy done revealed full crop and intestinal structure, with no liver, heart etc anomalies. Owner assumed coccidiosis due to humid weather and when feces was checked under microscope, cocci eggs were found. Amprolium was suggested as treatment and should have started today. Since owner did not treat for worms, ivermectin drops were also prescribed and will be done today, even though no eggs were found under microscope. Photos of necropsy:
