I have a 2 year old pet rooster patient with a month long history of slightly swollen eye with serous epiphora unilateraly(right eye) . He also has some yellowish material on the corresponding nares. I had him in and took a sample by flushing the nares with sterile saline and got results that said he had Klebsiella pneumoniae. There was some ab-resistance in that strain of K.pneumonia so my plan was to avoid antibiotics and rather nebulize him with diluted F10sc. I have read that they need to be nebulized quite often (q8-24h), so I was wondering if you usually ask the owner to do this treatment at home or if you do take them in for nebulisation this often? Do you have any recommendations on nebulizers i can ask the owner to buy?
Is there anything else i should do?
The clinical exam was otherwise good. I have not done any other diagnostics than the nasal wash and clinical exam.
I work in Norway btw if that's relevant.
The rooster does not seem too bothered by the issue. He is a bit congested at times and scratched a bit in the beginning, but usually exhibits normal behaviour. These photos are from the first consultation. He was less swollen about two weeks ago.
I recommend mesh nebulisers as they are quieter and produce a good drop size. Twice to four times daily neb. My worry is that birds can have very thick/solid type pus which may be difficult for the bird to move on its own. The peri ocular swelling may be due to the fact birds have a sinus peri ocularly so may actually need a sinus flush or at least massage. Also it’s likely to be sore so should receive analgesia I usually use meloxicam 0.6 mg/kg bid but I have used up to 1mg/kg bid
