Hi. I just got my first degus patient. This poor fella was probably left by its previuos owners in the forrest. It was lucky and was found by some passerbys. It has a deglowing injury on its tail. I would like to have it amputated, but i have never done this procedure on a degus. It seems that only tendons and bone is left on the tailtip. Is there someone in the Trondheim area that would like to have a go at it? And is there any chance of it healing on its own?

Amputation, yes, but it’ll be quite small, and very little skin to cover the wound. With good local and general analgesia, they’ll probably leave the wound alone. Sometimes, if the devolved tissue starts desiccating, you can just clip it just above the limit, allowing a little pocket of viable skin for sutures. I’d use monocryl or similar 5/0 for skin sutures and some surgical glue. Good luck!
