Hi,
Would appreciate some help with a hamster! 1 year old female, first came to see me in the beginning of December with alopecia and red skin. The owner didn’t notice pruritus. On examination the hamster had al
opecia on the ventral part of the chest and neck, around the paws and mouth. The skin was red and thickened, and seemed dry with crusts, especially around the mouth. Not much to see in the microscope, a small number of cocci. Could not see any parasites but was not able to do a deep skin scrape. Was treated with ivermectin q7-10 days x 3 to rule out parasites and local wash with chlorhexidine shampoo. We also changed the bedding and went over environmental irritants. The skin improved over 2-3 weeks and she was almost back to normal. Then it came back again mid-January. Tried local treatment again and antihistamine twice a day. This hasn’t helped and the hamster now looks like this. Any suggestions for further treatment or diagnostics? Thanks!
