I'm not experienced with rabbits and hope someone can help me evaluate this patient.
The rabbit is a 5 years old, neutered male, white Vienna. Presented at the clinic today due to loss of appetite. He was neutered 5 weeks ago. Been eating well after. But now, yesterday and today he is not eating. Feces and urine normal. The owner is feeding him hay, pellets and vegetables. For the last week the rabbit ate less hay.
On clinical exam the lower molars on the left side maybe looked a bit overgrown medially, but no large spurs and not injuring the tongue/gingiva.
We did dental x-rays, I find the x rays hard to evaluate and hope someone are able to help me! The incisors looked ok on clinical exam.
He also has bilaterally sore hocks.(see picture)
He was treated today with iv fluid, buprenorfine and meloxicam.
He is discharged with meloxicam and instructed to give critical care.
Exactly. The dental rads are not diagnostic. I’d ask for the circumstances of his castration? Anaesthesia protocol, etc. Then do bloods and a whole body rads to assess the GI tract. Start on famotidine 0,5 mg/kg PO q 24 h. Up his meloxicam to 1,5 mg/kg either q 12 or 24 h. Give him maropitant 1 mg/kg q 24 h x 2-3 d until he poops. Post the rads and we could help you assess the RGIS stage.
Regarding his castration: it is not uncommon for rabbits to have a delayed cortisol reaction weeks after surgery, especially if they were subjected to stress (dogs, cats smells or sounds) during or after surgery.
