Really hope someone can help me evaluate these x-rays and give me some feedback about what you think about this rabbit pasient.
Castrater female, lives together with another castrated male rabbit. Husbandry seems good, dedicated owner.
Yesterday the rabbit started to make this strange sounds, see attached video with sound. She don't do it all the time, maybe more when she is handled/stressed.
Owner think she is more apatic than normal, decreased appetite.
On clinical examination she seems alert, no secretion from nose/mouth/eyes. Rapid breathing, but stressed. I can not hear anything abnormal by auscultation of heart, lungs. Clean around genitals. Good body condition. Teeth looks ok (not sedated for inspection of molars) Can not palpate anything abnormal around head/throat.
Can not palpate palpate anything abnormal in abdomen, seems soft and she do not make the sounds when I palpate abdomen.
Hematology: slightly increased HCT and HGB - probably due to dehydration? Low on monocytes and basophils but should not be of clinical significans.
I don't have so much experience with rabbits and would really appreciate all thoughts
The increase in respiratory sound appears to originate from upper respiratory tract. The radiographs of the thorax and abdomen looks ok to me. With the rabbit being nasal breathers small changes in the upper airways will cause changes in respiratory noise and pattern. And increased stress with handling.
There does not seem to be any nasal or ocular discharge. There is a shift from predominantly lymphocytes to predominantly heterophils in the haematology so there appears to be an acute inflammatory response.
I would try metacam at 0.6-1 mg/kg bid for a start. Give SC fluids 30 ml or so, or IV fluids in an O2 cage if practically possible. Monitor food intake and droppings. Is it managing to eat the caecotrophs? Support feed with CC/oral fluids if food intake drops or feces production ceases.
You can also try antihistamines if she does not improve.
If antibiotics are needed first choice would be TMPS 30 mg/kg bid.
