Hi, I have a 6 y old Guinea pig with acute swelling and lameness. I can not find any wound of the skin but isn’t the reaction of the bone suggestive to osteomyelitis? If so, what AB to use? According to BSAVA, Cefalexin is not given p.o. and clindamycin is not for rodents.. so.. He is eating, but have some hiding behaviour
What Madonna Livingstone says, with an accent added to aspirate, CULTURE and RESISTANCE testing BEFORE you use any antibiotics!!
I’ve had a few of these with suspected haematogenic spread to the joint, and no active bacteria in site. Antibiotics will only contribute to resistant bacteria if there are no sensitive pathogen organisms to treat. Yes to nsaids and tlc.
