Love bird with feather loss. Owner got the bird when young in 2018. Had then less feathers around neck. Has since then gradually lost feathers around the neck and on the chest. This winter he has lost alot. No ubv, fed appropriate pellets, oats, carrots. Housed in a large cage with a budgie with no symptoms. Seems a bit itchy on the non-feathered parts, and also by the base of the wings. Otherwise in good shape. Eating and drinking as normal, active, playful, normal droppings. Owner has not seen him or his buddy picking feathers.
Any thoughts? My first thought is circovirus, but anything else? The problem is that the bird is not tame, and the owner is not able to catch him and bring him in...
No clinical exam, no diagnosis nor treatment.
In any case, this is fairly common in this species and it is often complicated and many factors in the etiology. The yellowish skin is probably due to xanthomatous fat deposits under the skin or in the dermis. Even if the owner doesn’t see this he might pluck.
I’d never give any assessment without a clinical exam. Offer home visit, if you have to, but charge accordingly. You need to assess environment, take samples, etc.
Good luck!
