Hello all, I have also asked this question on the US-based VIN site but thought I would ask here too:
"Skippy" is a 3 month old hand-reared Sun Conure. He has been in owner's possession for approximately 2 months. Is fed with Nutribird A19 formula, three times per day, 10ml of formula each time, with a 10ml syringe with flexible rubber tubing attachment. The owner offers ZuPreem Pastablend pellets, he shows little interest and maybe consumes a total of 5 pellets per day - although the owners says he seems to crush and drop them mostly so not sure how much is actually consumed. He lives cage-free in the owner's home. Is not known to consume any non-food items.
3 days ago the owner noticed a small wound on his neck, and noted that formula was leaking from it during feedings. Other than this wound she has not noted anything else unusual, his energy levels and appetite are normal, his droppings are unchanged.
I have no experience with examining Sun Conures but he seemed to be BAR on physical exam, with approximately 2mm opening over ventral neck that seems to communicate with the crop. Palpation of the crop was painful.
Because of my extremely limited knowledge, all I have done so far is asked her to keep the wound clean externally with dilute chlorhexidine and given him oral meloxicam at a dosage of 0.5mg/kg q24h (this was the dose recommended in the Exotic Animal Formulary 4th Edition James Carpenter, which is what happens to be in my drawer, though I now see that the VIN drug monograph recommends a much higher dose, oops...)
As always, I am working with very limited access to resources in Cambodia, referral to an avian specialist is not an option, and we have no veterinary laboratory.
Any idea what this could be from this limited info?
